SKILLS

Surf skills can substantially influence a crew’s competitiveness, safety and luck!

The surf zone is a fundamental part of a surfboat race. The crew’s surf skills may influence its competitive destiny. Conditions vary across a race course. Some crews may have to row through waves while others benefit from a smoother trip to sea. Returning to the beach some crews may be able to catch a wave while others have to row across a shallow dead zone or outflowing water. Surf and variable conditions are a core part of surfboat racing. Competitors who think it is unfair to be hit by a wave may be better suited to a different sport!

Coaches need to equip surfboat competitors with skills and techniques that help them safely deal with various surf conditions.
