Kim Marsh’s passion for surfboats includes coaching; developing surf skills; safety; surfboat culture and heritage craft.
Kim has been a member in some of Australia’s best surfboat crews through three decades. His competitive results at the national level have been equaled by very few. Kim claims his success is due to the team mates he was fortunate to compete with and the coaching he received from iconic sweeps.
Kim rowed in nine Australian Open Surfboat Championship finals being unplaced twice. He represented Australia and was in five NSW teams. He is one of the few “rowers” in the ASRL Hall of Fame.
Importantly Kim Marsh has built on a foundation of decades of observations, coaching and surfboat passion to be recognized as a significant contemporary coaching resource dedicated to the development of surf skills and surfboat safety. His abilities range from teaching novices to fine tuning champion crews. Kim has been fundamental in organizing and presenting Surfboat Sweeping and Rowing Schools throughout Australia with Matt Collins, assisted by many of Australia’s top sweeps and coaches.
Kim is a proud Life Member of Freshwater SLSC. He has been involved with crews and clubs throughout Australia. His contributions to the SLSA and ASRL include:-
Kim and his wife Leanne have been fundamental to the preservation and restoration of heritage timber surfboats. They lent their 1947 double ender to the SLSA to tour as the centre piece of the 2007 ‘Between the Flags - 100 Years of Surf Life Saving” exhibition.

- providing the ‘Sweeping Surfboats’ section in the SLSA Coaching Manual.
- drafting the inaugural SLSA sweep’s competencies guidelines.
- writing the SLSA circular on starting surfboat races dated September 2012 (Document Id 32/12-13) ‘Surf Boat Starting Process Education Circular’.
- writing “The Surfboat Book – a Complete Coaching Manual” endorsed by the SLSA to assist the coaching of surfboat competitors.
